Biography

Dr. Jiwen Fan's research encompasses atmospheric chemistry and aerosols, cloud physics, convective systems, severe weather, and aerosol-cloud-precipitation-climate interactions. Her work has advanced the fundamental mechanisms for aerosol impacts on deep convective storms, precipitation, and climate, and for impacts of urbanization and wildfires on severe convective storms and weather hazards. Her accomplishments have transformed previous views on impacts of nanometer- to micrometer-sized atmospheric aerosols on convective storms and related weather phenomena.

Beyond moving the fundamental atmospheric science forward, Dr. Fan has advanced model capabilities for simulating clouds, aerosols, aerosol-cloud interactions, and wildfires. Over the years she has developed or improved several modeling tools aiming at better predicting weather and climate or improving scientific understanding. She has played a leading role in cloud microphysics developments for models ranging from very fine-scale large-eddy simulations to coarse-resolution global climate models, and currently leads the development of a new cloud microphysics scheme for DOE’s Energy and Exascale Earth System Model.

She has published over 110 peer-reviewed publications including the high-impact journals such as Science, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, and Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. Fourteen of her publications were widely covered by the media/news outlets. Currently she holds 9 Highly-Cited in Geosciences field with 3 first-authored.
