Chief Engineer; manager, distribution and demand response

Biography

Kevin Schneider focuses on power distribution system analysis and power system operations. As a member of the Advanced Grid Institute, he is working to harness power technologies at scale, safely employing intelligent and coordinated control. He is working on increasing grid resilience and integrating clean energy resources into the grid.

Schneider has received many awards and recognition for his work in analysis of the U.S. power grid. He also serves as an associate professor at the University of Washington and is a research professor at Washington State University. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, past chair of the Power & Energy Society’s distribution system analysis sub-committee, and the current chair of the analytic methods for power systems committee.

In 2019, Schneider was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government to outstanding scientists and engineers who show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology in the early stages of their research careers.

“The increasing number of new devices being deployed at the edge of the power system, coupled with their increasing range of capabilities, present an unparalleled opportunity for increased system flexibility,” said Schneider. “New sensing and control devices, microgrids, distributed renewable energy sources, energy storage, electric vehicles, responsive loads, and transactive control all offer the potential to simultaneously provide benefit to the system and the end-use customer.” 

Schneider received his B.S. degree in Physics and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington.
