Leon Clarke Honored by the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium
Recognition for his contributions to the modeling community
Congratulations to Dr. Leon Clarke, economist and global change researcher working at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) commended him for extraordinary contributions to the field of integrated assessment modeling in 2014.
Clarke, working at the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI), a partnership between PNNL and the University of Maryland, was acclaimed by the group for his skillful and tireless leadership to ensure the significant work of the Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) community was objectively and prominently represented in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
"This prestigious award attests to Leon's sustained scientific and technical contribution and service to the international climate science community," said Dr. Ghassem Asrar, Director of the JGCRI in College Park, Maryland. "He is among the global leaders who are fostering greater attention on human-Earth system science and its societal benefits."
The mission of the IAMC is to pursue scientific understanding of issues associated with integrated assessment modeling and analysis. The IAM modeling field represents the climate, using modeling outcomes from the climate and research communities, Earth system models, and data that captures the impacts, adaptations and vulnerabilities of natural and human systems. The research area is vital to improve and foster understanding of the complex interactions and relationships among human and natural Earth systems, such as the economy, energy, land and water use, and the climate system.
Clarke has held a number of national and international leadership roles, including coordinating lead author for the IPCC and a member of the National Academy Study on America's Climate Choices. His expertise is in energy systems and technology deployment, international climate policy, scenario analysis, and integrated assessment of climate impacts. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering economic systems and operations from Stanford University.
