Biography

Dr. Qian joined PNNL in 2000. Currently, he is an AMS Fellow, Lab Fellow and the Leader of Earth System Modeling Group (with >80 scientists and staff) in the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change (ASGC) Division. He is an expert in developing and using atmospheric and land surface models to advance understanding and modeling of human influence on the Earth system.

Dr. Qian is a renowned scientist who has made significant contributions to the development and application of regional climate models. He was the first to incorporate aerosol effects into these models and his pioneering work on Asian aerosols has revealed their dominant role in shaping climatic trends in East Asia. Additionally, Dr. Qian has pioneered research into the impacts of snow and ice impurities on climate and water resources, providing new insights into changes in snowpacks in the western United States and the Himalayas. Dr. Qian is also a leading expert in uncertainty quantification in climate modeling and in understanding how atmosphere-land-water interactions modulate the influence of human activities on the environment. His recent research has focused on modeling urban and coastal environments.

Dr. Qian has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and have 19,000 citations with an h-index of 72. His work has also garnered significant media attention, with features in top-tier scientific publications such as Nature and Science, as well as major news outlets like the Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, BBC, NBC, and NPR. He has been invited to present his research at numerous prestigious universities and institutes around the world, as well as being an invited speaker at important conferences like AMS, AGU, AOGS, and EGU.

Dr. Qian currently serves as the chair of the AMS Coastal Environment Committee and as Program Chair for the Annual AMS Coastal Environment Symposium. Dr. Qian is also a member of the Scientific Steering Committee for the IPCC CMIP6 Global Monsoons Modeling Inter-comparison Project and was a contributing author to the IPCC report. Additionally, he directed the international workshops on “Uncertainty Quantification in Climate Modeling and Projection” and “Analysis of PPEs in Atmospheric Research”. Dr. Qian has reviewed articles for approximately 40 international scientific journals. He also serves as an editor for three prestigious journals: AGU’s “JGR-Atmospheres”, EGU’s "Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics” and “Advances in Atmospheric Sciences".
