Biography

Dr. János Szanyi is a Staff Scientist in the Catalysis Science Group within the Physical Sciences Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He joined PNNL in 2001 after working five years for PPG Industries, Inc., in Pittsburgh, PA as a Senior Research Chemist. Szanyi`s main research interests are in surface chemistry and catalysis; in particular the understanding of elementary reactions steps on model and real catalytic systems using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (primarily FTIR). After graduating from the University of Szeged, Hungary in chemistry, he conducted his graduate research at the Central Research Institute for Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and received a Doctor of University degree in chemistry from the University of Szeged. His graduate work involved the investigation of toluene alkylation on zeolites, and studying the acid-base properties of zeolites. Next he joined Prof. Jack H. Lunsford`s group at Texas A&M University as a post-doc and conducted research on the partial oxidation of methane. In order to learn more about the techniques and methods used in surface science, he joined Prof. D. Wayne Goodman`s group at Texas A&M University and received a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry. In his graduate work he studied the catalytic and structural properties of model bimetallic catalysts. After graduation he spent three years at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and worked as a post-doc under the supervision of Dr. Mark T. Paffett, studying the structural and catalytic properties of model alloy systems, and the mechanism of NOx reduction on zeolite-based catalysts. In his current position he is studying the chemistry of base metal oxide nanostructures supported on oxide film films or metal substrates. His research is focused on the understanding of the fundamentals of the interactions between environmentally harmful compounds (NOx, COx, and SOx) and metal and metal oxide nanostructures.
