Tumeo Starts New Year as ACM Senior Member

As a great start to the New Year, Antonino Tumeo, a scientist in the High Performance Computing group, was named a Senior Member for the Association for Computing Machinery. ACM uses this designation to recognize senior members for their exceptional performance that “sets them apart from their peers.”

As part of the Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division’s HPC group, Tumeo’s research currently involves modeling, simulation, and prototyping of HPC systems for irregular applications; general-purpose computing on graphics processing units; evaluation and design of manycore and emerging architectures; and big data analytics for the hardware–software stack. He also has worked on design automation for reconfigurable computing and field-programmable gate arrays devices. Tumeo has contributed to diverse projects for DOE’s Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and PNNL’s High Performance Data Analytics program.

Since 2011, Tumeo has served as a co-organizer of the Workshop on Irregular Applications: Architectures and Algorithms (IA3), held in conjunction with the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (known as SuperComputing). He co-organized two editions (2014 and 2015) of the Suite of Embedded Applications and Kernels (SEAK) Workshop at the Design Automation Conference and the Workshop on Reconfigurable Computing for HPC and HPDA (REC4P), co-located with the 25th International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL2015). In 2016, he served as program co-chair for the ACM International Conference on Computing Frontiers. This year, he will serve as co-organizer for GRAML’17, the First Workshop at the Intersection of Graph Algorithms and Machine Learning, held with the 31st IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium in Orlando.

Tumeo also has been a co-editor for various journal special issues, including the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, IEEE’s Computer, and Parallel Computing.

“It is always an impressive way to start the year when someone on our ACMD Division team becomes an ACM Senior Member,” said Division Director Nathan Baker. “Congratulations to Antonino for this and his many achievements that exemplify his dedication to research and his impacts on the HPC community.”

Before joining PNNL as a post-doctoral researcher in 2009 and a staff scientist in 2011, Tumeo earned his M.S. in informatics engineering (2005) and Ph.D. in computer engineering (2009) from Politecnico di Milano in Italy.
