For the October 2016 issue of Computer, Adolfy Hoisie, PNNL’s Chief Scientist for Computing and a Laboratory Fellow, served as a guest editor, along with Vladimir Getov, from the University of Westminster (also a recent visitor with the High Performance Computing Group at PNNL), and Pradip Bose, of IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. The issue devoted to energy-efficient computing focused on the challenges posed by the so-called “power wall” and its influence on designing current and future state-of-the-art computing technologies.

With the push toward exascale, energy efficiency will be of even more concern for achieving true high-performance computing, requiring what the editors called “revolutionary methods, as well as stronger integration among hardware, system software, and applications.” To examine these aspects more closely, the issue features five articles, specially selected by Hoisie, Getov, and Bose, that examine power-aware applications, systems software, and architectures; modeling and simulation for power, performance, and reliability; infrastructures for high-energy management; and low-power designs for novel systems.

Hoisie co-edited the October issue of IEEE’s Computer with Vladimir Getov and Pradeep Bose.

“It has been more than a decade since the power wall was introduced in the high-performance computing lexicon, and we still have not fully committed the resources and approaches needed to address the challenges it poses to future data-processing engines and supercomputers,” Hoisie explained. “We expect this special issue of Computer will, at least, revitalize the idea that energy efficiency in HPC is essential, especially in our current bid toward extreme-scale systems, which will require dynamic power consumption capabilities to manage workloads, as well as scalability among varied applications and the software and hardware stacks.”

The October issue of Computer is now available online. Computer is the IEEE Computer Society’s flagship magazine that covers all aspects of computer science and engineering.
