Dr. Hui Wan was chosen for one of three 2011 Linus Pauling Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowships awarded at the Laboratory. Wan, formerly at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, is an atmospheric scientist. Wan's Pauling postdoctoral research proposal targets decreasing the uncertainty in climate predictions by improving the way that model components are coupled in global climate models. Wan is the first Pauling Fellow to join the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division since the program's inception in 2010.

"The Pauling Fellowship is a great honor and joining PNNL is a new challenge with exciting possibilities. Scientists in the ASGC division have a rich experience in atmospheric processes and climate modeling. I look forward to working closely with them," said Wan.

The PNNL Linus Pauling Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship supports the next generation of scientists and engineers to lead discoveries pushing the frontiers of foundational science and solving compelling challenges for the nation and the world.

Wan has been a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute since 2009. Her research was focused on developing and testing high-performance and high-resolution numerical methods for the next generation of climate prediction models. She graduated summa cum laude from the Institute in 2009 and has already over a dozen peer-reviewed papers and other publications accomplished. She was awarded the 2009 Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society and the 2009 Wladimir Peter Köppen Prize for Climate and Earth System Research from the University of Hamburg.

Wan, along with other Pauling and postdoc Fellows at the Laboratory, was recognized at the Annual Postdoc Celebration held in September at PNNL. Her fellowship begins in October.
