Biography

Dr. Leo S. Fifield leads research to measure, predict, and control the effects of environment, exposure, and history on polymer material structures and properties. He is the founding director of the Materials Aging and Detection Science Laboratory and the associated ARENA Integrated Test Bed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington.

He is the Cables Task Lead for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy’s Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Materials Research Pathway (supporting safe and sustainable use of electrical cables in commercial nuclear power plants) and the Materials Testing Lead for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Radiological Security Team Nablo (promoting e-beam and X-ray as alternatives to gamma radiation for medical device sterilization).

Dr. Fifield is the 2020-2022 Chair of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Richland Section, a Member of the IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee standards organization, and a Board Member of the IEEE Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena.
