Robert Starke joined Kirsten Hofmockel’s group at EMSL to understand the formation, the cycling and the stabilization of organic matter in soil. His background in microbial ecology & metabolism as well as stable isotope probing he gained working on anaerobic metabolism in groundwater microbial communities with emphasis on enzymatic activity and isotope conversion at natural abundance (HPLC, 2D-CSIA, GC-IRMS) as an undergraduate in the groups of Prof. Dr. Matthias Boll and Dr. Carsten Vogt. His PhD research comprised the application of stable isotope probing and multi-omics on groundwater and soil microbial communities to understand the interactions between key players in ecosystems in the lab of Prof. Dr. Martin von Bergen.
