Congratulations to Dr. Johannes Lercher, Director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Institute for Integrated Catalysis, on winning the 2013 Tanabe Prize for Acid-Base Catalysis. Lercher was selected for this international award for "his substantial contributions to the field of acid-base catalysis." His research is focused on the fundamentals of catalytic materials and processes that are important to industrial applications. His work includes research on catalyzed reactions involving fossil fuels and alternative feedstocks such as biomass. Lercher conducts outstanding work in in situ characterization of catalytic processes. His research has resulted in nearly 400 publications and 10 patents.

The award is sponsored by the International Acid-Base Catalysis Group and a selected private company. The award is named after Professor Kozo Tanabe, who pioneered modern concepts in the catalytic chemistry of acids and bases. Lercher  will receive his plaque and give his plenary lecture at the 7th International Symposium on Acid-Base Catalysis, May 12-15, 2013, in Tokyo, Japan.
