Materials Research Featured on President's Budget Document
The cover of The National Nanotechnology Initiative Supplement to the President's 2013 Budget features an image from metal-organic framework research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The image was chosen by the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office. Captured with EMSL's focused ion beam scanning electron microscope, the false color image shows a metal-organic framework magnified 10,000 times. The framework is composed of zinc nitrate and 2,5-dihydroxy terephthalic acid. Researchers will use the image to better understand how nanoporous frameworks can be created and modified to improve carbon dioxide, xenon and other gas capture properties.
The document is a supplement to the President's 2013 Budget request submitted to Congress on February 13, 2012. The report describes activities underway in 2011 and 2012 and planned for 2013 by federal agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative.
The research that led to the cover image was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences.
