Public-private partnerships help fabrication industry leverage research dollars

RICHLAND, Wash. — Private industry can leverage research investments by accessing the Pacific Northwest Laboratory's Technology Transfer Program. At Fabtech, the U.S. Department of Energy's multiprogram national laboratory will feature several technology developments and specialized capabilities, including:

  • Extremely Thin-Walled, Seamless Tubing Making of thin-walled, seamless tubing is a lost art, known only to a handful of experts. The propriety process can reduce the wall thickness of cylinders by 50 percent. For example, using automobile steel stock, the process produces 1-mil-thick wall, 2-inch-diameter cans shaped in sizes ranging from straight-sided to inverted taper that withstand 100 pounds per-square-inch internal pressure.
  • Superplastic Forming Superplastic forming has the potential to reduce the weight and cost of fabricated structural components. In contrast to conventional forming methods, the high levels of uniform deformation that occur in superplastic forming metals can be used to form unique structures in a single forming process. Superplastic forming is traditionally used in the aircraft industry; PNL scientists are exploring applications for it in the automotive industry.
  • Advanced Non-Destructive Evaluation Instruments New non-destructive evaluation instruments available for licensing from PNL can help reduce scrap and speed production of metal components. For example, a pulsed electromagnetic acoustic transmitter instrument measures the time-of- flight of acoustic waves in stainless steel at temperatures as high as 1120 degrees Celsius (2070 degrees Fahrenheit). An ultrasonic hardness depth measurement instrument profiles the surface and underlying microstructure of hardened metal components, allowing manufacturers to determine within seconds if a part is out of specification.
  • 4,000-Ton Extrusion Press A high-precision, 4,000-ton extrusion press and support staff are available to industry for use in performing basic research and product development. DOE has released the press to the City of Richland, which has joined with PNL to highlight the availability of the press to the fabrication industry.

Industry can obtain technology from the Pacific Northwest Laboratory through technology licenses, cooperative research and development agreements, technical assistance and staff exchanges. Technical staff will be available in booth 7263 to answer your questions.
