RICHLAND, Wash. — Dr. William J. Madia, Battelle corporate senior vice president, has been named director of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington. Battelle operates the multiprogram national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

"Bill is an excellent choice to lead PNL into the 21st century," said Battelle President and CEO Douglas E. Olesen. "His reputation in environmental and nuclear technology is nationally and internationally known. Bill's experience in leading industrial research, technology, development and technology commercialization programs, grouped with his knowledge of DOE and its missions, provides an excellent match with PNL's strategies and needs."

Madia has held numerous senior management positions during his 19- year career at Battelle. Most recently, he was general manager of Battelle's worldwide environmental business. Prior to that, Madia held positions as president of the Battelle Columbus Laboratories, president of Battelle Technology International (including all European laboratories) and general manager of the Battelle Project Management Division.

"I look forward to being a part of this outstanding laboratory," said Madia. "Its exceptional science and technology base and its work in environmental cleanup, energy innovations, technology commercialization and national security are vital to the nation. I expect PNL to continue to have a very significant impact on the nation's environmental quality and competitiveness, especially at Hanford."

The laboratory employs 4,500 people.

Madia holds a Ph.D in nuclear chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, an M.S. in radiochemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

He has been active in numerous civic, charitable and educational causes, including the Franklin University Board of Trustees, The Ohio State University College of Engineering's Industrial Advisory Board and Franklin County (Ohio) Children's Services Board. He and his wife, Audrey, have three sons.

Madia succeeds Dr. William R. Wiley, who has taken the position of senior vice president for science and technology policy at Battelle.
