RICHLAND, Wash. — Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is one of Washington state’s top companies in the fields of biotechnology and high-tech, according to the latest rankings from Washington CEO magazine.

PNNL held its place at No.2 for the Top 50 high-tech firms in the state. And the laboratory is now ranked No. 6 on the magazine’s Top 25 Biotechnology and Biomedical firms, moving up two spots from the 2006 list. Rankings are based on staffing counts.

Microsoft tops the high-tech list, and in addition to PNNL, two other Eastern Washington firms made the cut -- Itron Inc., of Liberty Lake, and Key Technology Inc., of Walla Walla.

PNNL scientists conduct high-tech research and development in chemistry, biology and computational, environmental, and atmospheric sciences that lead to solutions for U.S. challenges in energy, the environment and national and homeland security.

Many technologies are born of the research and transferred to industry. The laboratory has received 67 Federal Laboratory Consortium awards for successful technology transfers to the private sector since 1984; the awards recognize the lab’s R&D in areas such as health, energy, environment and security.

The biotech and biomedical list includes for-profit, nonprofit and governmental research organizations. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle earned the top spot.

PNNL is the only organization in Eastern Washington on the biotech list. It employs about 400 biotechnology staff. These researchers are developing new knowledge to predict, manipulate and design biological systems for bioenergy, bioremediation, carbon sequestration and responses to stress, as well as biodetection. The research is conducted on behalf of the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, National Institutes of Health and the Department of Homeland Security.
