Tri-Cities Research District Speaker Series: The Future of Medical Isotopes and its Impact on the TCRD

When cancer strikes, a patient's focus turns toward effective treatment options. Most commonly known are radiation and chemotherapy; however, a pioneering treatment for prostate cancer patients has gained traction and is saving lives: the Cesium-131 brachytherapy seed produced by IsoRay, Inc. These lifesaving radioisotope seeds are
implanted directly in or around cancerous cells to kill the disease...and it all started right here in the Tri-Cities Research District.

IsoRay's William Cavanagh and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Darrell Fisher have teamed up to discuss cancer treatment technologies, industry trends, and what is needed to further advance this market within the Tri-Cities Research District. 

William Cavanagh is Vice President of Research and Development at IsoRay, Inc. He designs cancer treatment-related studies focused on brachytherapy. Prior to this, he served as Director of the Haakon Ragde Foundation for Advanced Cancer Studies in Seattle, Washington, where he led the foundation in the selection of viable research projects directed at treating advanced cancers.

Dr. Darrell Fisher leads the Isotope Sciences Program at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His responsibilities include medical and industrial isotopes research and applications, new radiopharmaceutical design and testing, and internal radiation dosimetry. Dr. Fisher also teaches radiological physics and technical writing at Washington State University.

About the Series

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Mission Support Alliance, LLC are teaming to host the speaker series dedicated to educating stakeholders, the community, and other interested individuals and organizations on what it takes to successfully develop a research park. Speakers will share their experiences in locating federal funding and investors, recruiting tenants, exploring ways to use sustainable
and green technologies when developing research parks, and how to successfully collaborate with universities, national laboratories, and industrial interests.
