Coming in 2021: Energy Sciences Capability Project
Connection. Interaction. Collaboration. These cornerstones of innovation will be central to a new facility, breaking ground in early 2020 at the heart of PNNL’s Richland, Wa., campus. Scheduled for completion in 2021, the Energy Sciences Capability project will serve as a focal point for the synergistic research being conducted among PNNL scientists and partners at the University of Washington, Washington State University, and partner other universities.
The new $90 million facility will showcase Washington State’s leadership in energy sciences that benefit the state, nation, and world. Funding for the building project is being provided by the Department of Energy, the State of Washington’s Clean Energy Fund, Battelle Memorial Institute, and PNNL.
Designed to meet DOE’s High-Performance Sustainable Building standards, the facility will feature an energy- and water-reducing design that takes advantage of ample natural light and will utilize waste-heat energy generated by high-performance computers housed in an adjacent building.
Inside the approximately 140,000-square-foot facility, an inviting mix of research space, mixed-use open space, and office space will provide labs, workstations, and flexible workspace for approximately 200 PNNL and visiting scientists, engineers and research support staff.
The facility will offer a collection of state-of-the-art research instrumentation to support fundamental research in chemistry, materials science, and computational science.
Projects will include research to:
- Reduce vehicle emissions, such as carbon monoxide, while using cheaper, more abundant materials
- Develop more efficient ways to produce fertilizers for agricultural use
- Turn waste into fuels and products more efficiently and economically
