Biography

Chongxuan Liu is a chief scientist at US Department of Energy, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, USA. His research areas are in geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and reactive transport of metals, radionuclides, and organic compounds in subsurface porous media. His expertise is in the development of mechanism-based models to mathematically describe geochemical and biogeochemical processes, reaction kinetics, and mass transfer through iterative experimental and theoretical investigations. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles with 2500 SCI-indexed citations. He is in the editorial board for several professinal journals. In 2011, he was elected as the Fellow of Geological Society of America for his contribution in geochemical and biogeochemical kinetics and diffusive mass transfer processes.

Research Interests

  • Kinetics for microbial degradation of organic matter, CO2, CH4, and N2O production and transformation in soils and sediments containing competitive carbon sources, electron donors, acceptors under variable biomass and energy yielding conditions
  • Reactive transport of metals, radionuclides, organic contaminants, and engineered colloidal and nanoparticles in subsurface environments
  • Groundwater, soil, and sediment remediation technologies
  • Generic theories and unified multi-scale models (UMSM) for fluid flow and solute and contaminant reactive transport modeling in terrestrial and sediment systems
