Nigel Browning Discusses Watching Atoms Move at AAAS 2013

Instead of capturing static images at a critical juncture, microscopists now build real-time, in situ movies, allowing scientists to directly observe mesoscale processes in biology, chemistry and materials sciences. The data from these movies, along with scale-spanning modeling and predictive capabilities, are shedding new light on interactions that will advance energy, environmental cleanup, and medicine. Nigel Browning, Chief Science Officer for the Chemical Imaging Initiative at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, discussed the latest in imaging research at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting. Nigel's talk focused on new quantitative measurements of the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles from solution. Nigel was joined by Stephen J. Pennycook, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and R. J. Dwayne Miller, University of Hamburg. EMSL Laboratory Fellow Don Baer and Eric Stach, Brookhaven National Laboratory, organized the symposium.
