Biography

Xiao-Ying Yu joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in 2006 and is a chief scientist and chemical engineer researching interfacial phenomena at the fundamental atomic and molecular level. Yu’s understanding is relevant to observed changes across multiple time and space scales in the environment, with implications in biological systems (e.g., biofilm and cell), aerosol, catalysis, and materials.

Currently, she leads the development of novel molecular imaging tools based on microfluidics and micro-electromechanical system at PNNL, which has resulted in multiple-issued patents, a prestigious R&D 100 award, and the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) for Technology Transfer award. Her unique chemical imaging techniques enabled direct in situ observations of complex liquid surfaces, air and liquid, liquid and liquid, and liquid and solid interfaces. Yu has developed new concepts in aerosol sampling, including the demonstration of a fast time-resolved aerosol collector using optical tagging. In addition, Yu has been a main contributor to protective action criterion and chemical mixture methodology—two flagship toxicological tools for emergency management, preparedness, and preparation for the Department of Energy (DOE) since 2007.
