RICHLAND, Wash. – Dr. William J. Madia has been promoted to Executive Vice President at Battelle, President and CEO Doug Olesen announced today.

Madia has been Director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Wash., since 1994. PNNL is operated by Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Battelle has begun a search for a new laboratory director at PNNL and will be interviewing internal and external candidates during the next several months. Madia will remain at the laboratory until a new director is selected.

At Corporate, Madia will be responsible for the management, strategic direction, and coordination of Battelle's entire DOE business. This includes PNNL, Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., Pantex in Amarillo, Texas, DOE programs at Battelle Columbus Operations, and other programs. In addition, he will be in charge of overseeing opportunities in the DOE market sector.

"Our DOE business has grown substantially and requires the full-time focus of a key executive at the corporate level," said Olesen. "Also, Bill's knowledge of the respective national laboratories will provide considerable value to DOE in developing further cooperation throughout the national lab system."

Under Madia's direction, PNNL received an "Outstanding" rating from DOE for fiscal year 1998. "Bill's done a terrific job. Such a rating is rarely given by DOE," added Olesen.

Madia joined Battelle in 1975 as a research scientist and has held a number of key management positions at Battelle - including Vice President and General Manager of the Battelle Project Management Division, President of the Battelle Columbus Division, President of Battelle Technology International (which included management responsibility for Battelle Europe), and Senior Vice President, Environmental Systems and Technology. His bachelor's and master's degrees are from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He holds a doctorate in radiochemistry from Virginia Tech. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he and his wife Audrey have three sons.
