To understand complex biological systems, PNNL is taking a leading role in developing powerful new tools and methods that integrate molecular biology, biochemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. Our researchers are teaming with universities and other national laboratories to understand how a living cell really works—examining them as integrated systems and not just as collections of parts. This is the challenge of post-genomics biology and it requires a fundamental change in the way biological research is conducted.
