Andrew J. Cowell
Andrew Cowell is a Senior Research Scientist in the Knowledge Discovery & Informatics group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His research interests include social media analytics, the semantic web (and in particular semantic wiki's), and the interaction of web 2.0/3.0 technologies into scientific domains. The majority of his work at PNNL has focused on aiding intelligence analysts in interacting with massive data. Since 2006 he has led a group of researchers investigating social computing technologies such as collaborative tagging, reputation systems, social book-marking and presence as potential methods for improving the intelligence process. Since 2011, he has taken on technical management duties of the Knowledge Discovery & Informatics group and leads a team of 52 researchers and engineers in the application of knowledge sciences.
Education: B.S. Computer Science from University of Bradford, UK; M.S. Cognitive Science from University of Manchester, UK; Ph.D. Industrial Engineering and Management Systems from University of Central Florida.
History: Prior to joining PNNL, Cowell served as a user interface researcher at British Telecom Research Laboratories and a Human Factors Engineer at Kodak Research Laboratories.
