Biography

Most of Eric Stephan's career has been devoted to the practical application of metadata and provenance to make large scale and complex scientific data more accessible and discoverable. He has applied his research in a number of domains (recent to previous): earth sciences, chemical imaging, geospatial, biology, computational chemistry, emergency response, and atmospheric sciences.

At the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Stephan is member of the W3C Advisory Committee, a member of the W3C Provenance Working Group , and co-Lead of the Connections Task Force.

Stephan is also a point of contact for provenance research, applied research in the semantic web community, and is the Integrated Regional Earth System Model (iRESM). Initiative Data Czar.

Research Interests

  • Science is continually confronted with the need to intelligently access data. Recognizing the critical need for tools and services that quickly mobilize the research community into action.
  • Stephan's current interests are working with semantic data grids, grids, web services, provenance, semantic graphs, metadata management, and nearly all types of available data management technology.
