Nation’s Energy Challenges

Addressing Our Nation’s Energy Challenges

Finding clean and cost-effective ways to satisfy our nation’s growing need for energy and electricity requires rapid innovation. Energy is critical to the health of our economy and our quality of life. It’s essential to our productivity and mobility. Currently, 85 percent of our nation’s primary energy comes from fossil fuels, 40 percent of which is used to generate electricity. Globally, production of fossil fuels, such as oil, may be nearing its peak and competition for these resources is affecting prices and increasing political tensions. Learn how PNNL scientists are helping to address these and other energy-related problems. Interactive Flipbook | PDF

Advancing Frontiers in Energy and Environment

Advancing Frontiers in Energy and Environment

Change is unprecedented and rapid. Nations fiercely compete for limited natural resources. Carbon emissions threaten environmental quality worldwide. Growing cities wonder where they’ll acquire new supplies of clean water and electricity. Ultimately, these and other energy and environment challenges test national and global economies—and possess the potential to diminish our quality of life. At PNNL, we believe the best way to address change is to create change—through visionary discovery and innovation. There is no single solution to our energy and environment challenges. Instead, we must closely examine the outcomes we need to achieve the energy security, environmental footprint, and economic performance we need as a nation. Interactive Flipbook | PDF
