The Will to Discover

It lives on in the Tri-Cities, Washington

Like nowhere else, at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory we have found a way to eliminate barriers that exist between scientific disciplines, businesses and cultures. Our approach—which has made all the difference—is to develop transformative scientific discoveries and innovations that literally improve our daily lives.

Science for the betterment of humankind is a philosophy by which Battelle has managed and operated PNNL since 1965. Battelle is the world's largest independent scientific research and technology organization. The organization has a rich legacy that stretches back to 1920 when Gordon Battelle penned his Last Will and Testament. His vision was inspired by a conviction to turn science into inventions that improve lives and change the world for the better.

The Spirit of Volunteerism

That same spirit lives on through the nearly 5,000 men and women employed at PNNL, located in the Tri-Cities, Washington, who give back to the local community through various volunteer activities. Like a stone skipped across a pond, Battelle and its employees are making a ripple effect across the Tri-Cities and region.
